Answering Hydro Jetting FAQs

Hydro jetting is an advanced technique to address stubborn clogs and blockages in toilets, drains, and sewer lines. It is an increasingly popular solution, but many property owners still have questions and concerns.

On this page brought to you by Rooter Hero Plumbing & Air, we address some frequently asked questions. If you have a particular concern not discussed here, then feel free to call Rooter Hero to consult with a plumber.

What is hydro jetting?

Hydro jetting is a drain cleaning technique which uses high-pressure water to thoroughly remove blockages from the inside of pipes. A specialized nozzle is attached to a hose which is then inserted into the drain or sewer line. The water pressure, which can range from 1,500 to 4,000 PSI (pounds per square inch), blasts away debris, grease, tree roots, and other build-up to leave the pipes as clean as a whistle.

What’s the process of hydro jetting?

The process begins with an inspection of the pipes, often using a small camera, to assess their condition and identify the cause of the clog. Once the problem is identified, the plumber will insert the hydro jetting nozzle into the pipe.

Once situated, the nozzle releases high-pressure water while simultaneously moving through the pipes to break up any blockages in its path. Note that the force of the water is strong enough to cut through even tree roots and dried concrete.

After hydro jetting, another inspection may be conducted to ensure the pipes are thoroughly cleaned and free of blockages. Our plumbers will show you this footage as well.

Is hydro jetting safe for all pipes?

Hydro jetting is generally safe for most types of pipes, including PVC, copper, and cast iron. However, it may not be suitable for older, fragile pipes that could be damaged by high water pressure.

Before hydro jetting, Rooter Hero’s plumber will inspect your pipes to determine if they are in good enough condition to withstand the pressure. If the pipes are found to be too old or fragile, alternative drain cleaning methods, or a pipe replacement, may be recommended.

Can hydro jetting damage my plumbing?

When performed by a trained professional, hydro jetting is a safe and effective way to clean your plumbing system. The key is to use the appropriate water pressure for the specific pipes in your system. Too much pressure can potentially damage weak or compromised pipes, but a skilled plumber will know how to adjust the pressure to avoid any harm.

How long does hydro jetting take?

The length of the hydro jetting process depends on the severity of the clog and the length of the pipes being cleaned. In most cases, the process takes about a couple of hours. This includes the initial inspection, the hydro jetting itself, and a final inspection to ensure the pipes are clean and clear.

Should I Call a Plumber for Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting is not a DIY job; you need specialized equipment and expertise to ensure it’s done safely and effectively. If you’re dealing with recurring clogs or slow drains, or if you suspect tree roots in your sewer line, then it’s best to call a trained plumber.

The plumbers at Rooter Hero can assess your plumbing system, recommend the best course of action, and perform hydro jetting if necessary. We are proud to be a one-stop-shop for all of your plumbing service needs.
