What Is Backflow?

Backflow occurs when water flows the wrong way in piping from an unwanted source such as a municipal septic system or a public or private sewer line. Commercial plumbers deal with two kinds of backflow situations: backpressure and back-siphonage. Let’s take a moment to explain the difference. Backpressure- There are three reasons why this problem may occur:

• An increase of downstream pressure in a public water supply
• Drop in potable water supply
• Increase in boiler temperature

Back-siphonage – When pressure releases, back-siphonage can occur. It is common for this to happen when a water main break or when there is an increase in water usage. For example, during drought conditions when public water supplies are under high demand, back-siphonage can be common. Commercial properties have devices in place to prevent backflow, but if the prevention device is not working correctly it possible for pesticides, industrial pollutants, sewage, and other contaminants to creep into your clean water supply. It can also lead to poor water conservation. For these reasons, we recommend that businesses have their backflow prevention device tested yearly to identify weak spots.
