Is Your Home's Landscaping Ruining Your Plumbing?

A beautifully landscaped home with well-placed greenery and tall, majestic trees is a dream come true for many homeowners. Unfortunately, many times plumbing problems and landscaping design flaws can cause major issues with a home’s plumbing system. Tree roots and irrigation systems can damage main sewer lines resulting in expensive repairs and water damage. At Rooter Hero Plumbing, we believe our customers can have both a gorgeous yard and a healthy plumbing system. Here are some tips to reduce the chances of sewer line obstruction.

Call Before You Dig

You’ve probably heard this phrase before, and it’s true. Whether you’re planting a flower bed or installing an irrigation system, it’s important that you know the exact location of your home’s main sewer line. Knowing where the lines are in your yard will prevent you from accidently puncturing the line. If there is any doubt where the main line is, give a local plumber a call to help you identify its position in your yard.

Plant Trees a Safe Distance from the Sewer Line

Trees need to be planted at least 10 feet from your home’s sewer lateral. This provides enough room for the trees roots to grow without piercing the line. Many homeowners operate under the false assumption that smaller trees and bushes don’t have the potential for substantial root growth. The plant or tree may grow for years without you ever knowing that its roots are creeping closer and closer to your main line. If you already have large trees on your property that are planted close to the sewer line, it’s in your best interest to have your sewer line inspected annually. A video camera drain inspection is a great way to see if tree roots have grown into the line or if their compressing the line making it difficult for water to flow through. In some cases, it may be the better option to remove the tree and its root ball altogether. Of course, most homeowners prefer this to be the final option due to the expensive of removing a large tree.

Always Call a Professional

Lastly, if you are planting landscaping like large bushes and trees, always opt for professional installation. Not only is it more likely that the landscaping is planted correctly and will thrive, but it guarantees that your plumbing system is protected.
