What Is Considered a Water Heater Emergency?

Obviously, no hot water when you need it most is a clear emergency. We understand how disruptive a lack of hot water can be to your home or commercial property.

Beyond a lack of hot water, several other common water heater issues demand immediate professional attention. Ignoring signs of trouble can lead to significant property damage or even safety hazards.

Don’t wait to give our team at Rooter Hero Plumbing & Air a call if you encounter any of the following water heater emergencies:

  • Sulfur or "rotten egg" smell (for gas water heaters). If you detect a strong smell of rotten eggs or sulfur, especially near your gas water heater, you are likely dealing with a major safety concern. This odor indicates a gas leak, which can lead to a fire or explosion. If you smell gas, evacuate immediately and call your gas company and 911 from a safe location. Once the gas company clears the immediate danger, we can safely diagnose and repair the source of the leak within your unit.
  • Significant leaks. If you discover water pooling around the base of your water heater, or if you see visible rust streaks running down the tank, you have an urgent problem. A leaking tank means its integrity is compromised. It can quickly flood your basement or utility closet and cause extensive water damage to your property and belongings. We can quickly assess and address the source of the leak.
  • Loud banging, popping, or rumbling noises. While all water heaters make some noise, excessively loud banging, popping, or rumbling sounds often indicate a significant build-up of sediment at the bottom of the tank. This reduces efficiency, damages the tank, and can lead to premature failure. We can address this with a professional flush and inspection.
  • Discolored or foul-smelling hot water. If the hot water coming from your taps appears rusty or brownish or has an unpleasant smell, there could be a problem within your water heater tank. Rusty water points to internal tank corrosion, meaning your tank may be failing. Foul smells, if not sulfur-like or gas-related, can indicate bacterial growth. We can investigate the cause and recommend appropriate cleaning, anode rod replacement, or a new unit.
  • Temperature and pressure (T&P) valve discharge. If you see water or steam consistently discharging from your unit’s T&P relief valve (a small pipe usually running down the side of the heater), it means there's excessive pressure or temperature build-up inside your tank. This is a crucial safety mechanism, and continuous discharge suggests a dangerous malfunction that could lead to an explosion if not addressed. We can evaluate why the valve is activating and perform the necessary repairs or recommend replacement.
  • Tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse (for electric water heaters). If the circuit breaker controlling your electric water heater repeatedly trips, or if fuses keep blowing, there is likely an electrical issue within your unit. This could be a faulty heating element, wiring problem, or short circuit, which poses a risk of electrical fire or shock. We can diagnose the electrical fault and perform the necessary repairs safely.

When Do I Have to Replace My Water Heater After an Emergency?

When your water heater acts up, it doesn't automatically mean you need a brand-new unit. Often, our plumbers can efficiently resolve issues with prompt repairs and get your hot water back quickly. For example, a malfunctioning thermostat, a single faulty heating element, a broken dip tube, or a T&P relief valve that needs replacing are all typically fixable problems. We can often diagnose and repair these types of issues on the spot.

However, in certain scenarios, repairs may not get the job done, and replacement may be the more reliable and cost-effective path forward. Replacement is probably unavoidable if your tank is leaking, for example. Once the tank itself starts leaking due to internal corrosion, repairs are not possible, and you need a new unit.

Similarly, if your water heater is over ten years old and experiencing a significant problem, its efficiency has likely declined, and continued repairs frequently become more expensive than the long-term benefits of a new, more reliable unit. Constant breakdowns, persistent loud noises indicating extensive sediment damage, or signs of severe internal corrosion also suggest it's time for a replacement.

Our experts provide honest advice and will not recommend replacement if repairs will suffice. If we do recommend replacement, we are prepared to work efficiently to minimize your time without hot water. For a standard tank-based water heater, our plumbers can typically complete the full replacement – including draining the old unit, removing it, installing the new one, connecting it to existing lines, and verifying its functionality – in just a few hours. Factors like switching fuel types, relocating the water heater, or upgrading to a tankless unit will add more time due to necessary plumbing and venting modifications, but we always strive for a seamless and swift transition.

If you find yourself without hot water or are worried about the condition of your water heater, don’t hesitate to call (866) 941-8214 or contact us online!
