Prepare Your Home’s Plumbing System for the Holiday Travel Season

The upcoming holiday season means traveling for many families visiting relatives for an extended period or taking advantage of off-season travel deals. Whatever your reasoning for traveling may be, it’s important that you prepare your home’s plumbing system for your absence. Before you head out the door, here are some things you’ll want to take care of so you can relax and have a nice get-away.

Main Water Valve

This first tip isn’t necessarily for the casual traveler who is taking a weekend trip here or there. It is for the serious traveler that may be gone for weeks at a time.  In parts of the country where earthquakes are a threat, turning off the water coming into your house at the main shut-off can save your home from a potential flooding disaster while you are away.  Even if you don’t live in an earthquake prone area, taking this step is still a good idea in case a leak develops in your water pipes while you are gone. The main valve shut-off can be found in a basement or crawlspace and will turn the water off to the entire property.

Drain Cleaning

Drains that go unused for a decent period can begin to smell. One of the ways you can prevent this is by having your drains hydro-jetted before you leave. If you don’t feel it’s necessary to go to this extreme, you may want to consider pouring a Bio-clean into your drains. This drain cleaning agent is environmentally friendly and available by calling your local Rooter Hero Plumbing plumber. At the very least, make sure you run your garbage disposal and run cold water through all sinks to get rid of any surface debris. And, don’t leave dirty dishes in your dishwasher.

Test Your Sump Pump

A broken sump pump can lead to flooding while you are gone.  To test to make sure the sump pump is working correctly, pour water into the pit to make the water level rise. A properly functioning sump pump should automatically begin running. If yours doesn’t do this, first check to make sure it is plugged in. If the pump is plugged in, you may need repairs or replacement. In addition to these plumbing tips for travelers, ask friends or family members you trust to check on your home while you are gone. If a problem is present, you have the opportunity to take action right away. Plumbing problems that are taken care of right away cause less damage and cost less money. Knowing your home is safe and secure will help you enjoy the holiday traveling season a little more.
