Best Thermostat Settings for Your Home

You rely on your thermostat to monitor the indoor temperature and turn the HVAC system on and off in order to maintain the temperature at the desired level. Knowing the right temperature at which to set your thermostat will help you improve indoor comfort levels and lower your electricity bills. The internet is awash with conflicting information about the recommended thermostat settings for various seasons, so it’s easy for anyone to get confused.

At Rooter Hero Plumbing & Air, we are a reputable and experienced HVAC company, so we know the right temperature your thermostat should be set at in the summer, winter, spring, and fall. Today, we are going to highlight the recommended thermostat settings for your home.

Recommended Thermostat Settings for Winter

During the colder months, you should set your thermostat between 68°F and 72°F when someone is at home. If there’s no one at home, you can leave the thermostat set between 62° F and 66° F. The perfect night-time thermostat setting for winter is 66° F. A mild drop in temperature helps you sleep better because the set point for body temperature drops when you sleep. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, keeping your thermostat between 68° F and 72° F during daytime, and turning it down a few degrees at night can save you around 10% on your energy bills.

Recommended Thermostat Settings for Summer

The normal thermostat setting during the summer when you are at home is 78° F. If you plan on leaving your house for a few hours, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends raising your thermostat setting to 85°F -88°F. This can help you save as much as 10% on cooling costs. Since the nights are a little cooler during the summer, we recommend you keep your thermostat at 78° F.

Recommended Thermostat Settings for Fall and Spring

Setting your thermostat during the fall and spring can be challenging because the weather tends to be unpredictable. On cooler spring days, set your thermostat at 68° F when you are at home. When you leave your home, lower the thermostat setting to 60° F. On warmer spring days, set your thermostat at 78° F. The recommended thermostat settings for fall range from 70°F to 78°F, depending on the temperature outside.
