It is another version of AC only that this is bigger in size. In comparison to the conventional air conditioner, its cooling/heating capacity is higher. It can cool an entire building including commercial ones. Packaged air conditioners nominal capacities range between 3—15 tons.
Packaged air conditioner unit is assembled in the factory. Only skilled technicians can install this AC unit. It is normally placed outside the house, in a special room within a building or on the rooftop.
It comes with the following protection devices:
- Low/high-pressure switch
- Overload relays for all motors
- Airflow and water flow switches
- This has winding protection thermostat that is in-built. In the event of overheating, the thermostat automatically disconnects the circuit.
- An interlocking circuit. This has an evaporator fan motor starter that ensures that the compressor cannot start if the fan motor is not running and vice versa.
Components of the Packaged AC
A packaged air conditioner is a self-contained unit that comes assembled in a casing. This casing houses all the components of the machine:
- Electrical panel
- Return air grill and front panel
- Air filter
- Thermostatic expansion valve
- Condenser (air-cooled or water-cooled)
- Evaporator fan and housing
- Evaporator coil
- Humidifying and heating mode components may also be included.
During the summer season, dehumidification (cooling mode)
During winter, humidification is needed (heating mode)
Types of Packaged Air Conditioners
The type of condenser installed in the packaged AC can either be water-cooled or air-cooled. The air-cooled condenser type is usually meant for 5-ton capacity. The water-cooled one is for 5-ton capacity and above.
The water-cooled condenser type can be assembled completely at the factory. It can then be tested and even charged with refrigerant before installation in the field.
On the other hand, the air-cooled type of condenser cannot be assembled at the factory. Neither can it be charged because the laying of pipes used for refrigerant, testing of the pressure, evacuation, and charging can only be done out in the field.
In the distribution of air, fans (centrifugal ones), are normally provided on the side of the evaporator. This can develop high static pressure. This works on the principle that the higher the pressure, the better the flow of air to the room. Distribution of air is through ducts and grills. Quantity of air normally ranges between 10 to 11.3 cube meter/min (350-400 cfm) per ton.
In critical environments, for instance, a computer room which needs airflow at a higher rate, high capacity fans are provided (capacity 550 cfm).
Two Refrigeration Condenser Systems
Some units come with two independent refrigeration systems installed. In such a case, the coils used for cooling normally have a common tube, even though these systems are independent.
A condenser having an internal partition that forms two independent condensers is used. Usually, the side with the water is common to the two independent condenser portions.
Sometimes one compressor runs all the time, while the other compressor is under control of a single-stage thermostat. In such a case, it is possible to control the capacities to either 50% or 100%.
