History of Plumbers & Plumbing

Plumbing is a modern luxury that many of us take for granted. But, have you ever wondered how the pipes and fixtures you use every day were developed? The history of plumbing is full of interesting twists and turns. At Rooter Hero, we provide residential and commercial plumbing service to local California and Arizona area property owners. Our skillful plumbers enjoy being part of a lasting legacy of professionals that help keep communities safe, healthy, and clean. While plumbing systems do seem to be an entirely advanced technology, there are many examples of ancient civilizations that also developed creative ways to bring fresh water to cities, and to dispose of wastewater properly. If you’re also interested in learning more about the development of water management, then keep reading for some fun facts about how ancient civilizations dealt with plumbing in their cities.

Mohenjo-Daro

Mohenjo-Daro is an ancient city that was part of the Indus Valley Civilization, which is located in the modern nations of Pakistan and northern India. Remarkably, the people living in this ancient Harappan community created plumbing technologies over 4,000 years ago. Water was collected from rooftops in private homes and brought into the bathroom via terracotta pipes. Wastewater was also disposed of via open chutes that poured into public drains located on the streets.

Crete

The island of Crete, located in the Mediterranean Sea, was the home of the Minoan civilization. These advanced city dwellers also developed ways to direct the flow of water. They were the first to hide pipes and plumbing lines underground and inside walls. Baked clay pipes carried the water from individual properties into the main sewer lines, which consisted of limestone lined with cement. In Knossos, rainwater was collected from roofs and courtyards and drained into cisterns which helped to flush debris out of toilet chambers.

The Roman Empire

Perhaps the most advanced plumbing system from the ancient world could be found within the Roman empire. The citizens of Rome emphasized cleanliness, and public baths were extremely popular. Keeping the bathhouses full of fresh water required a complex plumbing system as well as methods for heating. Using wood-burning furnaces, a hypocaust system was utilized to heat the water from beneath. The Romans also had latrines, extensive networks of lead pipes, and large scale aqueducts that are still left standing today.
