How Does a Toilet Tank Work?

Toilets play an essential role in modern life, though they are often taken for granted until they stop functioning properly. Many become intimidated when they lift the lid of their toilet’s tank. What are all of the devices that make your toilet work? What happens when one of the components break or starts to deteriorate? At Rooter Hero Plumbing, we provide high quality commercial and residential services for local California and Arizona area communities. Our team of certified plumbers enjoy helping our customers understand how their pipes and fixtures work. Do you want to know more? Read below to find out how a toilet tank works.

What Happens When You Flush the Toilet?

Every time you push down the handle and flush the toilet, an interesting process occurs. Pressing the handle will automatically raise the chain, which is connected to the flapper. This action will open the flapper and alert the flush valve. This sends fresh water from the tank into the toilet bowl through the drain opening and pushes the waste into the main drain.

How Does the Water Refill?

After the flushing has occurred, the toilet tank will refill with water. This happens because the filler float or float ball is lowered due to reduced water levels. This will then signal the fill valve to turn on, pouring fresh water into the tank via the refill tube. At the same time, the flapper will seal the drain opening, which will keep the water in the tank and out of the toilet bowl. As soon as the water level rises to the appropriate level, the float valve will prevent more water from entering the tank.

What Is Inside Your Toilet’s Tank?

In order for the entire process to run smoothly, each component must play their part. If a piece is damaged or isn’t functioning properly, then it can cause your entire toilet to stop performing correctly. Here is a list of the items that you would find inside your tank:

  • Toilet handle
  • Handle Arm
  • Flush Valve
  • Fill Valve
  • Overflow Tube
  • Refill Tube
  • Drain Opening
  • Flapper
  • Chain

If you suspect that one or more of these components have been compromised, then a repair or replacement is likely needed to get your toilet to work normally again. Some replacements are easy and straight forward, while others will require a professional plumber. If you are unsure, call the team at Rooter Hero Plumbing and we can provide a thorough inspection, diagnosis and repair right away.
