How to Install a Toilet

Is your outdated toilet causing a lot of problems for your household? Whether you’re looking to get rid of your green-tinted 1970’s era-style porcelain, or your current model has begun to crack, a new toilet installation is a great home improvement project that can offer a high return on value. At Rooter Hero, our local plumbers provide commercial and residential plumbing repair service for customers across Arizona and California. We understand the importance of proper installation and want to help you achieve the desired results. Here are some tips for installing a toilet and what to do if you run into problems along the way.

Gather the Right Tools for the Job

The first step is to ensure that you have all the equipment required for the task. Here is a list of the most important items to have on hand while installing your new toilet:

  • Towels
  • Heavy Duty Gloves
  • Screwdriver
  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Wax Seal

Toilet Installation Steps

Next, it’s time to get to work. If you’ve never installed a toilet before, we’re here to help. Follow these steps to complete the job accurately.

  • Step One: Put on your pair of heavy-duty work gloves. Then, lay the towels down on the bathroom floor to keep any stray water from causing damage. Next, turn off your water supply with the shutoff valve. Neglecting this urgent step will create a major problem. Once you’re sure there is no water flowing to your toilet, you can disconnect the supply line with the adjustable wrench.
  • Step Two: Some toilets have a separate tank and bowl. If that’s the case for you, then you’ll need to dismantle the tank first. Unbolt the tank with your wrench and set it to the side. If your toilet is all one piece, you can skip this step.
  • Step Three: Unbolt the toilet bowl at the base. You may need to remove the plastic caps to do so. The screwdriver should come in handy for this task. You’ll also need to check the condition of your bolts and flange. This is where your new toilet will connect to the floor. If you see signs of cracking, rusting, or damage, now is the time to replace them.
  • Step Four: Place your new wax ring in the flange. Then line up the bolts with the holes on the new toilet base. If your toilet is heavy, then you may need some extra help. Once the toilet is in place, you can place the washer and nut down onto the bolt and tighten them. Finally, reconnect the supply line and test out your new toilet.
