Preventing Mold Growth In Your Bathroom

What do you get when you mix a warm, damp, porous area? The perfect breeding ground for mold. This makes your bathroom the ideal location for mold to grow and flourish. Mold is a common problem for many, and is often the byproduct of a plumbing leak. Mold can cause a lot of damage, and lead to expensive repairs. In most cases, mold can be prevented by taking the proper precautions. Here are some tips for preventing mold growth in your bathroom.

The Problem With Mold

When it comes to mold it is important to understand that not all mold is created equal. There are over 100,000 different types of mold, many of which are perfectly harmless.  In fact, we are constantly surrounded by mold spores, many of which are so small you can’t see them. However, some mold can be harmful. Black mold is a nefarious mold type that can be prolific, given the right circumstances. Prolonged exposure to black mold can cause illness, including upper respiratory issues, itchy eyes, sore throat, sinus issues, headache, and more. Those that have compromised immune systems or suffer from allergies and asthma may be more susceptible.

Treating Mold

Mold can be particularly cumbersome to deal with. If not properly treated it can continue to grow back. Porous surfaces like drywall, carpet, wood, and fabrics are more susceptible to damage. Vinegar is an effective natural cleaner you can use to treat mold. Bleach can also be used, however bleach only kills mold at the surface, in which case it will probably grow back. Vinegar is more effective as it penetrates the surface deeper, killing the mold spores. In some cases, more extensive remediation may be necessary if the damage is beyond repair. This can happen if mold growth is left undetected where it can fester. Mold remediation can cost anywhere from $500 to $3,000 on average depending on the severity of the damage. The best bet is to prevent mold in the first place.

Preventing Mold Growth

When it comes to plumbing problems the best defense is preventative measures. Mold is one of those things that can easily be prevented by taking the right steps this includes:

Proper Ventilation

The most important step in preventing mold growth is to make sure your bathroom is properly ventilated. This means making sure your bathroom ventilation system is working and is installed correctly. Bathroom vents need to vent bathroom exhaust away from the home. Sometimes, corners get cut and the vent doesn’t disperse the exhaust correctly, leading to poor ventilation. When this happens you create the pristine condition for mold growth. In addition, you can also ensure good ventilation by opening a window. This helps the moisture escape and circulates fresh air which is important in mold prevention.

Keep It Dry

Porous materials are prone to mold growth. This means that in order to prevent mold growth it is important to keep rugs, shower curtains, and towels dry. Wash your bathroom textiles frequently and always make sure you hang towels up to dry.

Use A Squeegee

A squeegee can be very useful at removing excess water, allowing your shower to dry faster. The quicker your bathroom dries, the less prone it will be to mold growth.

Proactive Leak Detection

One of the best things you can do to prevent mold growth is to be proactive with your leak detection. Leaks are one of the number one reasons for excessive mold growth. If left unchecked, the problem can grow and fester. It is important to check under sinks, and behind toilets. Also familiarize yourself with the warning signs of a leak which includes: the sound of dripping or rushing water, unexplained puddles of water, the smell of mold or mildew, or a higher than usual water bill.
