First and foremost, let’s start with the basics. Check your thermostat. This might seem obvious, but it’s worth a shot. You could have set the thermostat to 70 degrees but a fiscal conservative in the building might have "helped out" by re-adjusting it to something higher.
In addition to checking the degree setting, make sure that the air conditioner is set to "cool" or even "auto." If the unit is simply set to "on," then it might be that only the fan is running. Worse, the setting could be at "heat." Yikes!
Well, great. Another obvious suggestion, right? If the AC is blowing air, then surely the power supply is functional, but what about the outdoor unit – specifically the condenser? If its power is out, then it will not cool the air.
Check your circuit breaker panel and find the switch that controls the condenser unit. If it is tripped "OFF," then reset it by switching it back "ON." If the circuit breaker trips "OFF" again, you should NOT force the switch back "ON!" There might be electrical issues that should be inspected by a trained technician.
The air filter is responsible for keeping debris and other particles out of the HVAC system and your living space. When it gets too full, though, the air flow will be restricted and negatively affect the cooling. The rule of thumb is to replace air filters once per season, and more often if you have pets and/or people with allergies and respiratory issues in the household. Hold the used air filter up to a light. If you can’t see light coming through the filter, then it is past time to replace that filter!
Refrigerant is CRUCIAL for proper cooling and low refrigerant is no good. We hope this is not the problem, because air conditioners do not deplete the refrigerant. If the refrigerant level is low, then that means you likely have a leak in the air conditioning unit. These cracks are not easy to find or repair. Fortunately, the technicians at Rooter Hero have the experience, training, and equipment to get at the root cause of the issue and nip it in the bud.
