Change Filters

The manufacturer of your HVAC system surely considered the risk of mold growing in the unit. This is part of the reason why there are filters. Air filters are there to catch dirt, debris, and other things including mold spores. These filters must be replaced periodically however. We generally recommend filters be replaced once every few months. Forgetting to replace your air filter will increase the risk of spores and bacteria getting into your HVAC system.

Keep Out Moisture

Water is the source of life and mold is just as fond of water as we are. If you want to prevent mold and mildew growth, then you must suffocate them of water. Keep out moisture from your HVAC system by employing humidifiers in stuffy areas such as the basement and bathrooms. You should also insulate ducts running through unconditioned spaces like the garage and attic. Moisture and condensation can be enough for mold and mildew to start growing in your HVAC.

Allow Ventilation

It is impossible to keep everything out of the HVAC system. Surely some spores are going to make it into your HVAC system. What do you do? You do your best to get them out! This is where ventilation works its magic. Make sure ducts are not clogged with debris and spend some time during the fall to clear off leaves and twigs from the HVAC system.

You should also ensure proper drainage of water and moisture that happens to get into the HVAC system. If you have a condensate drain tube, then make sure it is securely connected to some type of drainage or catch bucket so moisture does not build up.
