Avoid Flushing the Toilet Again
The first step is to stop flushing. After the first flush, there is a chance that your ring or valuable item is still recoverable. With each subsequent push of the lever, the item will be pulled further along your drainpipe, making it less likely to find. Let everyone in your household know that the toilet is out of commission until further notice.
Turn Off the Water Supply
Next, you will need to shut off the water supply. This will help prevent indoor flooding and water damage during the process of removing your toilet. Neglecting this vital step could put your property at risk.
Take Off the Tank Lid
After you have taken all preliminary precautions, then you can begin the extraction process. Take off the lid on your toilet’s tank and set it to the side.
Remove the Water from Your Toilet
Now you will need to carefully remove the water from your tank and toilet, without flushing. This can be time consuming so go slowly. Wear gloves and use a container and large bucket to dispose of as much water as possible. Keep towels nearby as well to handle the small amount of water that still remains.
Detach the Toilet
Unscrew the bolts at the base of your toilet and remove it from the current location. Toilets can be very heavy, so you may need more than one person to successfully perform this part of the task.
Search for Your Valuable Item
Taking care not to damage the toilet, lay it on its side and check the waste opening. Take a look at the wax ring as well. There is a good chance that your item is lodged in one of these two locations. If you still haven’t been able to find the item, then it is best to call a nearby plumber who can assist in the recovery. They will have a scope or camera, which can inspect the pipes for your item.
Replace the Wax Ring and Toilet
If you did find your item, then congratulations! Now is a good time to replace the wax ring if necessary. When you’re ready, place the toilet back in its original position and screw the bolts at the base tightly onto the floor. Put the lid back onto the tank, restore the water supply and test to make sure that there are no leaks or issues.
